Of course, both Canada and the
United States celebrate a
Thanksgiving holiday. Every year, I
try to stop and appreciate all I
have to be thankful for. I guess we
should all be doing that every day,
no matter which side of the border
we are on.

Did you know there are some notable
differences between our 2
holidays. Canadian Thanksgiving is
the 2nd Monday
in October, a full month and a half
before US Thanksgiving (the 4th Thursday
in November). Canadian
Thanksgiving lines up with
Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus
Day in the United States. The
earlier Canadian Thanksgiving
certainly relates to an earlier
harvest in much of Canada.

By tradition, first American
Thanksgiving relates to the pilgrims
and indigenous people meal in 1621,
but did you know that Canadian
Thanksgiving predates that? In 1578,
English explorer, Martin Frobisher
and his crew, celebrated a “thanks
giving” meal to thank God for
granting them safe passage through
northern Canada (now Nunavut).
US Thanksgiving is recognized as a
holiday in all 50 states, where
Canadian Thanksgiving is an optional
holiday in the Atlantic provinces.
Even in this busy season, I hope we
can all take a breath, and give
thanks for what we have.
