Organizing Photo Memories

(DETM Aug 2026 Newsletter)

Dear Dave,

Organizing Memories

Most of us have phones and computers full of unorganized photos. Here are a few of my favourite tips for keeping my important photo (and video) memories organized and searchable. I’ve been taking digital photos since the early 2000s (as an early digital photography adopter). I also completed the big task of digitally scanning all of my family photos and hard copy pictures from my youth a few years ago.

I now have over 260,000 digital images organized and searchable. This makes it easy to do projects such as making my annual personalized Christmas card, creating a photo life book as a gift for my sister or preparing a slideshow for my annual university buddy reunions.

FOLDERS – I upload all of my photos and videos from my phone to my computer for safety and redundant backups. Plus, this frees up valuable space on my phone. I organize my photos on my computer in nested folders: By Decade, Year, Month & Event. Of course, on a computer this makes it easy to quickly find photos from specific events using the computer search function. .

(photos above and below are from the archaeological site of Troy in SW, Turkey that we visited about 20 years ago)

BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP! - Having all of my photos in one place, makes it easier to do a regular full backup in case of an inevitable computer failure.  No computers last forever. What would you lose and how upset would you be if you lost your phone or your computer hard drive got severely corrupted today?

ONLINE AVAILABILITY – I also take advantage of uploading my photos to Google Photos online service. This service used to be free (and unlimited), but still includes 15 GB of storage for your photos, email, Google docs, etc. Of course, Google has some amazing search capabilities, so finding specific photos from a place, event or with a person (or pet) takes only seconds. Additional storage space is quite reasonable.

Amazon provides a similar service - Amazon Photos – and is included at no charge with Amazon Prime.

Having photos on the web, yet available via free phone apps such as Google Photos or Amazon Photos, has a number of advantages. The photos do not take of valuable phone space, but are still readily available and searchable, as long as I have a cell connection. The online services also provide one more level of backup for your important memories.

For example, when I saw the movie The Odessey last week with friends, I wanted to show a few of my photos from our 2004 tour of Turkey, exploring the actual archeological site of Troy. Within seconds I had the photos I was thinking of.

I wish you luck in keeping your great memories alive!

Sincerely,

Dave Emery
